Launched in 2015, the 99 Classics return in a second generation that keeps the original silhouette and brings ten improvements. The tuning moves closer to a neutral, balanced target: the bass stays engaging but more restrained, which frees up the mids and treble. Listening gains clarity without becoming tiring.
The walnut wood ear cups are held by gold-finished cast zinc hardware and a spring steel headband. The internal volume of the cups has been enlarged, and careful sealing allows a bass vent built into the jack housing. The two 40 mm dynamic drivers are matched for a more stable stereo image.
A 3.5 mm to USB-C adapter with a built-in DAC and amplifier comes with the headphones, for recent devices without a headphone output. The 1.8 m dual-twisted OFC cable is Kevlar-sheathed to better resist tangling. The 7 mm diameter socket also accepts the thicker 3.5 mm plugs of optional cables.
The memory foam ear pads have been redesigned and now attach with clips, which makes replacing them simpler. Every component of the headphone can be changed, from ear pad to cable. At 290 g and with an impedance of 16 Ω, it stays comfortable for long sessions and works with most sources.
