The hip-dac 3 keeps the range's hip flask profile: 102 x 70 x 14 mm and 135 g, in an aluminium case that slips into a pocket or a bag. It replaces the built-in DAC and amplifier of a phone, a tablet or a computer. A 16-core XMOS chip handles the USB-C input and feeds the Burr-Brown conversion.
The Burr-Brown True Native chip plays every format without altering it, from MP3 to DSD256, PCM 384 kHz and DXD 384 kHz. MQA gets full three-unfold decoding, and the asynchronous USB-C input keeps jitter away. Metal film capacitors, the revised GMT circuitry and a new crystal oscillator lower phase noise further.
The fully balanced circuit, with a custom OV op-amp and a Texas Instruments power IC, supplies 400 mW into 32 ohms and 6.3 V into 600 ohms from the 4.4 mm socket. The 3.5 mm S-Balanced output delivers 280 mW into 32 ohms. PowerMatch tailors gain to the headphones, iEMatch tames hiss with sensitive IEMs and XBass reinforces the low end in the analogue domain.
A 2200 mAh lithium-polymer battery gives up to 12 hours of listening, enough for a London to Tokyo flight. The USB-C input accepts audio up to 32-bit and 384 kHz. At idle the unit draws less than 2 W, and 4 W at most.
