The C 558 uses a belt drive that keeps motor noise away from the stylus. A flat-ground rubber belt drives a precisely machined sub-platter, which turns in a brass bearing on a hardened steel shaft. The record spins evenly, for calmer listening over long sessions.
A sophisticated power supply converts mains voltage to DC, then regenerates a precise AC voltage for the motor. The motor is thus isolated from noise and fluctuations on the mains. Speed varies by less than 0.50 % at 33 rpm, and wow and flutter stays under 0.15 %.
The 9-inch tonearm, 230 mm long, holds the cartridge rigidly with an effective mass of 9.5 g. Tracking force and azimuth adjustment ensure precise tracking of the groove, with low distortion and record wear. The Ortofon OM10 cartridge comes factory-fitted, ready to play straight out of the box.
The glass platter and the solid CNC-machined MDF plinth absorb energy from the record and isolate external vibration. The non-resonant Perspex dust cover, heavier than most, stays in almost any position thanks to its counter-sprung hinges. The turntable is 43.5 cm wide and 12.5 cm high.
