90 mm planar magnetic driver

The FT5 is the first planar magnetic headphones from FiiO. Its 90 mm driver spreads the vibration across the whole diaphragm surface, which limits the deformation typical of dynamic membranes. The PAR diaphragm is about 6 micrometres thick and has aluminium-silver alloy coils laid down by a process drawn from the semiconductor industry.

Forty neodymium N52 magnets

Each driver has twenty N52 neodymium magnets, forty for the pair, set on either side of the membrane: eleven inside and nine outside. This layout balances the forces and holds a steady magnetic field of up to 1.5 tesla. Sensitivity reaches 110 dB/Vrms at 1 kHz, which allows the FT5 to be driven even from a portable player.

Lightweight build and comfort

The magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis, less dense than aluminium alone, lightens the whole for long listening sessions. The three-axis design lets the earcups pivot and settle to the shape of the head. Two pairs of earpads are supplied: suede for a balanced rendering, protein leather for a wider and more detailed soundstage.

Modular cable and connectors

The FT5 comes with a 1.5 m cable made of 392 strands of silver-plated monocrystalline copper. Four interchangeable plugs cover the common sources: 3.5 mm, 4.4 mm balanced, a 6.35 mm adapter and a balanced XLR-4 adapter. A leather storage case and a velvet pouch round out the package.
