The 109 PRO is Meze Audio's open-back headphone with a dynamic driver, named Headphone of the Year 2023/2024 by EISA. Its tuning favours detail, clarity and just the right amount of punch, with precise imaging and full-bodied vocals. At 40 Ω and 112 dB SPL/mW at 1 kHz, it is easy to drive from a portable source as well as from a home system.
The 50 mm driver combines a W-shaped dome in carbon fibre-reinforced cellulose composite with a 22-micron torus in beryllium-coated semicrystalline polymer, applied by Physical Vapor Deposition. Its corrugations, cut at a 45.5° angle, add stiffness while keeping the membrane light and fast. The assembly sits in a CNC-machined aluminium frame, and a copper-zinc alloy stabiliser around the membrane absorbs vibrations to reduce distortion.
The ear cups are black walnut, and the structure combines cast zinc, manganese steel and vegan leather for a light yet highly durable build. Inside each cup, a spider-shaped structure and an acoustically transparent grille expose the driver from both sides: Meze Audio's most open pattern to date. The driver is set at a precise angle and distance from the ear for a fit that follows human anatomy.
The velour ear pads surround the ears; softer and more breathable than leather, they prevent sweating during long listening sessions. The self-adjusting headband spreads the 375 g of the headphones with even pressure, whatever the shape of the head. Fully serviceable, the 109 PRO can be taken apart and maintained part by part for as long as needed. It comes with two TPE cables of 1.5 m and 3 m with a 3.5 mm jack, a gold-plated 6.3 mm jack adapter, a PU leather pouch and a hard EVA case.
