The MU1 has a built-in Roon server that handles up to 100,000 tracks, with no separate server in the system. It also works as a Roon Ready endpoint with Tidal and Qobuz, a UPnP renderer and a Tidal Connect receiver. A quad-core Intel i3 processor and 8 GB of RAM run Roon inside the case. All formats and all sample rates are supported.
The internal clock has an intrinsic jitter below 0.6 ps RMS. On a connected digital source, the MU1 locks to 44.1 and 48 kHz signals, from 1FS to 4FS, within plus or minus 50 ppm. An FPGA upsamples files and streams to 4FS or 2FS with the Pure Nyquist filter, and brings DSD64, DSD128, DSD256 and DXD back to those same rates. The signal then leaves digitally, without passing through an analog stage in the MU1.
The MU1 has no DAC: it outputs the signal digitally over LS1, AES (XLR) and S/PDIF (RCA) to an external DAC. It connects directly to the Grimm Audio LS1 series, and a third-party DAC works too. Three digital inputs, AES3, S/PDIF and Toslink, accept PCM up to 192 kHz and DoP. A surround option extends playback to six digital channels, with five LS1 or three DACs.
A USB 2.0 port takes a stick, an SSD or a hard drive, and the library can also reside on a NAS. An internal SSD for music is available as an option, to be ordered with the unit. The 3.5-inch color screen shows 480 x 320 pixels, and setup is done in a browser through the GRUI interface. The unit weighs 4.5 kg, measures 355 mm wide and 295 mm deep, and draws 17 W in normal use.
