The Tube Box E brings the tube output of Pro-Ject phono preamps to the E line. Two ECC83 (12AX7A) tubes can be replaced to try other types and shape the sound signature. Pro-Ject describes a full, laid-back sound with lush mids.
The circuit is fully discrete, with no operational amplifiers, and uses a low-noise FET input stage. Two-part RIAA equalisation, passive and active, holds the curve within ±0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. A dual-mono layout separates the channels, and polystyrene capacitors are used where possible.
Gain is selected on the front panel, from 40 to 63 dB, as is the subsonic filter at 20 Hz. On the underside, input impedance can be set from 10 ohms to 2 kohms or to 47 kohms, and capacitance from 47 to 587 pF. The preamp can therefore be matched precisely to the cartridge in use.
The all-metal case shields against electromagnetic interference and vibration, with a machined aluminium front panel and controls. It measures 10.3 cm wide, 7.3 cm high and 13.1 cm deep including sockets, and weighs 450 g. The RCA inputs and outputs are gold-plated, and an 18 V outboard power supply is included.
