106 mm planar driver

The driver measures 106 mm across. Its ultra-thin diaphragm is driven over its whole surface by an array of N50 neodymium magnets, rather than by a voice coil glued at its centre as on a dynamic driver: the diaphragm moves as one piece, without the breakup modes that colour the midrange. Bandwidth runs from 10 Hz to 50 kHz, and harmonic distortion stays under 0.1% at 100 dB.

Offset magnet array

The LCD-2 Classic keeps the magnetic layout of the first Audeze headphones: magnets sit offset on either side of the diaphragm, without Fazor waveguides. That offset clears the airflow behind the diaphragm and widens the stereo image. What comes out is the warm, unhurried tone that made the LCD-2's name in 2009.

Glass-infused nylon

The earcup rings are moulded in glass-infused nylon, the outer grilles in metal. The headphone weighs 544 g, spread by a spring-steel suspension headband that vents the top of the head. Over a long session, that spread matters more than the figure itself. Every unit is hand-built in Santa Ana, California.

70 ohms impedance

70 ohms and 101 dB per 1 mW: the LCD-2 Classic wants a real headphone amplifier. Audeze quotes 100 mW as the minimum and recommends more than 250 mW; the driver handles 5 W RMS and passes 130 dB. The 1.9 m braided cable ends in a balanced 4-pin XLR, with a 6.35 mm adapter in the travel case.
