Two ES9219MQ

Conversion falls to two ESS ES9219MQ, paired with an XMOS XU316 USB stage and a QCC5125 Bluetooth chip. The unit accepts up to 384 kHz at 32-bit and DSD256, and also works as an MQA renderer. The 0.96-inch OLED screen shows the incoming format and the settings.

Two headphone outputs

The 3.5 mm single-ended socket delivers 125 milliwatts per channel into 32 ohms, the 4.4 mm balanced socket 340 milliwatts. Stated signal-to-noise ratios reach 120 and 122 dB. Accepted impedances run from 8 to 150 ohms single-ended and 8 to 350 ohms balanced. The shell measures 32 x 72.2 x 12.5 mm and weighs 37.3 grams.

Seven Bluetooth codecs

Bluetooth 5.1 receives over SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive and LDAC. A built-in omnidirectional microphone takes calls, and a car mode follows the vehicle USB switching on and off. The 550 mAh battery is rated for more than eight hours of listening, charging in two hours at most.

Computer and phone

The same USB-C port connects the device to a computer and the XMOS XU316 input makes it work as a converter. On the mobile side, Bluetooth 5.1 connects it wirelessly to the phone. In both cases, the 3.5 mm asymmetrical and 4.4 mm symmetrical outputs work with both in-ear earphones and headphones.
