The MC A Mono is a truly mono cartridge for reading Mono recordings.

If you are reading a mono record with a stereo cartridge, you will not get the same signal in both channels due to imperfections such as crosstalk, noise, phase errors, tracking errors, anti-flicker and the distortion. This difference between the channels will result in an unstable and partially blurred image. A mono switch can, to some extent, improve this phenomenon.

Reading a single disc with a True Mono cartridge will not have any of the aforementioned problems because this cartridge produces only one signal, which is then directed to both channel channels. This makes it possible to obtain a much stronger and stable image, with a more complete sound.

Another significant advantage of using a True Mono cartridge for playing mono disks is the absence of a vertical movement response. This means that a True Mono cartridge is essentially impervious to the pinching effect that comes into action when the stylus is pushed vertically up in very narrow furrows. In addition, the response to dust, dirt and wear will be considerably reduced because the vertical component will not be heard. The end result will be a much cleaner and quiet reproduction of the mono disc. These effects can not be obtained by the mere use of a mono switch.

High-end materials

The cartridge case is made of titanium with the selected laser melting (SLM) manufacturing technique. The SLM technique has been developed by Ortofon for the manufacture of MC A90 and SPU A90 cartridges, and has been refined for the following models in the exclusive series.

The SLM process of fine titanium particles together, layer by layer, to build a one-piece body without foreign material. This technique allows precise control of the density of the material material, which allows extremely high internal damping. The final result offers a freedom of vibration inside the body of the cartridge.

The use of titanium has made it possible to further improve the internal damping capabilities as well as the overall rigidity of the structure.

Very high-end materials for new coil technology

The use of the inconteuum coils ofOrtofon in gold-plated copper and 6nx-free Oxygen allows a lossless transmission of diamond movements via its cantilever in boron. This combination combines a low mobile mass with an extremely high degree of rigidity.

A specially designed reinforcement is used to obtain extreme precision each in each coil tower in all layers. This allows MC A mono to reach a higher degree of channel separation, while simultaneously offering a lower distortion and a better channel balance. The frame is made in a metal alloy which is much less magnetic than normal iron, which reinforces the dynamic capacity of the cartridge.

The protection of the coil wire has been made from our exclusive TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) material at high damping power, which improves the total damping properties of the cartridge.

The magnetic system

The magnetic system is based on an extremely powerful and compact neodymium magnet, which makes the generator system both compact and lighter thanks to its minimum dimensions. Inspired by the MC A95 design elements, the MC A mono uses a specially designed reinforcement composed of a metal alloy that is much less magnetic than normal iron. This brings a significant advantage to the dynamic capabilities of the cartridge since the frame has virtually no influence on the magnetic field during movement. Associated with the coils against it, it ensures a perfect reproduction of the movements of the cantilever without any compromise.

Any trace of residual magnetic influence that would create a distortion is avoided thanks to the use of a field stabilization element (FSE). The ESF ofOrtofon, a small cylinder of conductive material strategically placed inside the magnetic system, ensures that the force field remains stable regardless of the movement of the frame. The ESF improves channel separation, while minimizing dynamic distortion and intermodulation.

Improved damping capabilities

The Wide Range Damping system (WRD)Ortofon added to the list of important components. In this system, a small platinum heavy disk is sandwiched between two rubber absorbers, both with different properties. This guarantees not only an exceptional follow-up performance, but also creates perfect depreciation over the entire frequency spectrum. As a result, distortion and resonance are virtually eliminated.

The WRD system, which was originally introduced to MC 20 MK II in 1979 and was then used on all the cartridges in the exclusive series, is one of the main reasons why MC has Mono, while getting the most frequent response. Linear and the higher higher frequency limit never reached, offers a fantastic follow-up of 90? M with a vertical tracking force of 2.3 grams.

Ortofon Replicant 100 - the best diamond in the world

One of the prerequisites for a linear reproduction with a wide range of frequencies and optimal tracking performance is a diamond whose shape is as close as possible to the original cutting stylus. Like all cartridges in the exclusive series, the MC A Mono uses the replicant diamond 100 ofOrtofon, known for its thin and light profile and its extraordinarily large contact surface.

As the replicant 100 is closest to the shape of the cutting stylus, it can draw with unparalleled precision by any other existing needle. The special diamond polishing and the use of a boron cantilever provide remarkable transparency, speed and responsiveness, which exceed those of any other combination.

Stylus protection

The stylus protection provided for the MC A Mono is designed to be easily replaced and removed without the risk of touching the fragile stylus assembly.

To avoid accidentally damaging the reading tip or cantilever, please mount the read-to-read guard supplied on the cartridge when it is not used. The stylus protection must also be fixed during assembly or disassembly of the cartridge.

As shown in the drawing below, the stylus protection is easily removed by entering the sides using the thumb and index, tilting downwards and pulling straight along the direction of the cartridge. The attachment of the stylus protection is of course by the reverse movement: hold the oblique stylus protection, push it in place and tilt it up as indicated by the arrows.

Setting up and alignment

In order to obtain maximum separation of channels, it may be possible to adjust the azimuth. If the cartridge is not perfectly perpendicular to the disc surface, it may be necessary to tilt the reading arm or the read head of a few degrees. The correct azimuth is established by observing the reflected image of the 2 parallel front lines of the cartridge. The front lines of the cartridge must form a straight line with reflected lines. A flat mirror can also be used to facilitate this process.

Four screw sets are included for mounting the cartridge on your playback arm. It is very important to choose the right screw length when mounting the cartridge. The use of too long screws may block the screws inside the cartridge, which would cause insufficient mounting in the reading head. The choice of the length of the screws depends on the thickness of the head shell, and the free length of the screws under the head shell must not exceed 2.5 mm. Mount the cartridge without tightening it on the head box during this procedure.

TILT ANGLE OF THE STYLUS (SRA)

With a complex stylus form such as replicant 100, particular attention should be given to the positioning of the diamond in the groove.

The angle of inclination of the stylus (SRA - see Figure) is very important for the performance of the stylus replicant 100, and the long contact surface (the live edge) of the diamond must be almost perpendicular to the surface of the disc, side view. The angle between the surface of the disc and the cantilever is close to 23 degrees when the SRA is 90 degrees.

An ideal starting point is to place the playback arm parallel to the surface of the disc and use the recommended tracking force. The contact surface will almost be perpendicular to the disc surface with this setting. The SRA can now be changed gradually and carefully by adjusting the VTF and, if necessary, the height of the reading arm. The goal should be a SRA around 92 degrees, determined by the listening experience. In other words, the tip of the stylus must point slightly towards the base of the reading arm.

Performance with great compatibility

With optimal weight and compliance to suit the vast majority of modern reading arms, MC A Mono is easily compatible with a seemingly infinite range of contemporary high-end platinum equipment. The low internal impedance makes the MC a mono less sensitive to the load and thus ensures compatibility with the transformer Ortofon ST-80 SE, as well as with the widest range of preamps and transformers.
