The MU2 combines a Roon server, a streamer, a DAC and an analog preamplifier in a single case. The Roon server handles up to 100,000 tracks. The unit also works as a Roon Ready endpoint with Tidal and Qobuz, a UPnP renderer and a Tidal Connect receiver. It connects directly to a power amplifier.
The Major DAC upsamples to 128FS with the proprietary Pure Nyquist filter. A bit-exact 11th-order noise shaper at 1.5 bit then works at 512FS. The internal clock has less than 0.6 ps RMS of jitter. Grimm Audio states total harmonic distortion below -120 dB (0.0001%) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 107 dB.
Volume is set by relays, from -79 dB to +8 dB in 1 dB steps, with 0 dB as the recommended maximum. Two stereo analog inputs, XLR and RCA, are added to the digital inputs. The XLR and RCA outputs deliver 12 dBu nominal. An additional analog source therefore shares the same volume control.
The 6.3 mm headphone jack delivers 40 mW into 30 ohms and 55 mW into 600 ohms. Three digital inputs, AES3 (XLR), S/PDIF (RCA) and Toslink, accept PCM up to 192 kHz and DoP. The 3.5-inch color screen shows 480 x 320 pixels, and setup is done in a browser. A USB 2.0 port takes an external drive, and an internal SSD for music is available as an option.
