The RS250A hands conversion to an eight-channel ESS ES9028PRO chip, which plays PCM up to 768 kHz at 32 bits and native DSD512. HiFi ROSE surrounds it with ten in-house discrete op-amps and a 100 MHz femto oscillator with ultra-low phase noise. The specification lists a 122 dB signal-to-noise ratio and 0.0003% distortion at 1 kHz. A shielded linear power supply feeds the processor and the audio outputs.
The front holds an 8.8-inch multi-touch IPS screen that shows cover art, the library and video at 60 frames per second. To its right, two rotary knobs handle power and volume, above a headphone jack. The aluminium case is machined from a single piece, which limits vibration between assembled parts. A Bluetooth remote and the ROSE Connect app for Android, iOS and PC complete the controls.
ROSE OS gives access to TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, internet radio and RoseTube, and the unit is Roon Ready, Spotify Connect and DLNA compatible. The HDMI 2.0 output sends 4K video at 60 Hz to a TV or projector. An external USB CD drive is all it takes to play and rip discs. A full MQA decoder and Hi-Res Audio certification from the JAS round off the software side.
The rear panel groups an RCA line input, optical, coaxial and USB Audio inputs, plus RCA, optical, coaxial and USB Audio outputs for an external DAC. A SATA bay takes an SSD of up to 4 TB, and two USB 3.0 ports accept drives of up to 10 TB. SMB, FTP and WebDAV sharing opens the library to other devices on the network. Dual-band Wi-Fi, gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth are built in.
