The TD 1600 carries over the subchassis construction of the 160 series. Three conical springs, standing on the base rather than hanging from the top board, isolate the platter and the arm from outside vibration. A tensioned steel thread ties the subchassis to a pin on the base, which rules out lateral movement and allows vertical travel alone.

The 12-inch aluminium platter weighs 4.2 kg and comes in two parts, with the ground belt running on the inner sub-platter. An electronically regulated synchronous motor drives it, at 33 and 45 rpm switched from the front. Belt tension is adjustable.

The 9-inch Thorens TP 92 arm equips the turntable, with magnetic anti-skating. The deck runs manually, with no automatic stop at the end of a side. It ships without a cartridge, leaving the choice of transducer entirely open.

The rear terminal offers a single-ended output on RCA and a balanced output on XLR, the latter usable with a moving-coil cartridge. The external power supply keeps the mains section away from the motor and the arm, on 115 or 230 volts depending on the version. The solid wood plinth carries a gloss walnut finish here, with a triCom top board.
