The Pre Box S2 Digital uses two ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M converters in a dual-mono configuration. Over USB it plays PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD up to DSD512, and decodes MQA in hardware. The optical and coaxial inputs accept PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
Pro-Ject developed its own clock, with jitter quoted at around 100 femtoseconds, and its Optimum transient digital filter. Eight filter characteristics in total let you fine-tune the sound. Organic polymer capacitors and thin-film miniMELF resistors sit on a gold-plated four-layer circuit board.
The 6.3 mm headphone socket on the front accepts headphones from 8 ohms. A variable RCA output feeds a power amplifier. The supplied remote sets the volume and also controls playback on a computer: play, pause, forward and rewind.
The silver finish corresponds to Edition 23, revised with John Westlake: redesigned internal power supply, master clocks and output stage, plus a more powerful headphone amplifier. Its headphone output rises from 68 to 100 mW into 32 ohms. The aluminium and metal sandwich case measures 10.3 x 3.7 x 12.2 cm and weighs 366 g.
