The front panel of the Unico Pre v2 is machined from a 15 mm thick block of aluminium, and a 2 mm aluminium cover wraps around the whole chassis. The Midnight Black and Velvet Gold finishes come with wooden inserts that echo the original Unico logo. The Unison Research logo itself serves as the power button.
This fully balanced hybrid preamplifier works without global feedback, in a dual-mono layout. The first of its three stages relies on a pair of ECC83 / 12AX7 Gold Lion valves running in Class A, and it sets the sonic signature of the unit. The following solid-state stages bring the gain to 20 dB on RCA and 15 dB on XLR. The valves are covered for 3 months, the unit for 2 years.
At the back, the Unico Pre v2 offers three RCA line inputs, three XLR line inputs, an MM / MC phono input and a Line In. On the output side there is one XLR output, two RCA outputs intended for bi-amping, a dual unfiltered subwoofer output and a Line Out for a processor or recorder. A 3.5 mm trigger socket switches on the connected power amplifiers at the same time, and output voltage reaches 8 V on RCA and 16 V on XLR.
The built-in DAC, based on a Sabre ES9018K2M converter with balanced output, accepts PCM up to 384 kHz and native DSD up to 256x through its USB-B input. Two Toslink optical inputs and two S/PDIF inputs, up to 192 kHz, take the other digital sources. The phono stage, with semi-passive RIAA equalisation, offers load and gain settings on the rear panel for both MM and MC cartridges. Volume is set by an integrated circuit with precision resistors, also from the infrared remote control.
