Unison Research designed the Reference Pre after its Reference monoblock power amplifiers, to pair them with a preamplifier of the same standard. It is a dual mono tube preamplifier, split across two chassis and working in pure class A. It comes in a Cherry or Walnut finish.
Four RCA inputs, two XLR and a tape input take the line sources, with an impedance of 47 kΩ and 20 dB of gain. Two independent phono inputs complete the set, with selectable load resistance and capacitance. The phono stage offers 45 to 55 dB of gain and passive RIAA equalisation within ± 0.2 dB.
The line section uses two 300B triodes with ECC82, ECC83 and 6C45P tubes, while the phono stage uses four 6C45P and two ECC83. Bandwidth runs from 10 Hz to over 100 kHz at -0.3 dB, with 0.1 % distortion. Feedback is 15 dB on the line stage and zero on phono.
The rear panel holds one RCA output, one XLR output, an active tape output and an active subwoofer output, with an output impedance of 500 Ω. A link switches on the Reference power amplifiers. The preamplifier draws 320 W at most, measures 45 x 56 x 22 cm (W x D x H) and weighs 30 kg, with a 2-year warranty and 3 months on the tubes.
