Switched-resistor volume control

The volume control borrows the architecture of the Statement S1 preamplifier: reed relays switch a network of through-hole resistors instead of a potentiometer. This approach allows the sensitivity of each input to be adjusted and a maximum listening level to be set. The volume knob runs on a ball-race bearing, and the logo brightness is adjustable.

Eight assignable inputs

The eight input sockets comprise two XLR pairs loaded at 100 kΩ, one 8-pin DIN, two 5-pin DIN and three RCA pairs at 47 kΩ, rated for 2.2 V typical and 9.5 Vrms maximum. Each front-panel button can be assigned to the input of your choice. The 8-pin DIN socket supplies ±18 V for an external phono stage such as the NVC TT. Outputs are provided twice, on balanced XLR and on RCA, at 10 Vrms.

Headphone output and controls

The 6.35 mm front-panel jack is driven by a 1.5 W class A/AB headphone amplifier into 16 Ω. Eight buttons cover standby, mute and input selection, alongside the volume knob. The bi-directional Zigbee remote mirrors the Focal & Naim app, while a wireless link connects the unit to the NSS 333 streamer. An optical control also synchronises a New Classic amplifier such as the NAP 350.

Measurements and power supply

On the line input, distortion is quoted at 0.003% at 1 kHz and 0.018% at 20 kHz, for a 2.2 V input and volume at 0 dB. Bandwidth covers 3 Hz to 40 kHz at -3 dB, crosstalk reaches 90 dB at 1 kHz and maximum gain is 15.5 dB. The unit measures 43.2 × 31.75 × 9.15 cm, weighs 11 kg and draws 20 W in everyday use. The NPX 300 external power supply can be added later.
