The AMP 20 brings twelve amplifier channels together in one enclosure, each rated at 200 W into 8 ohms and 400 W into 4 ohms. With five channels driven at once, every channel still holds 200 W into 8 ohms. Marantz designed it to form a home cinema pairing with the AV 20 processor from the same series. The chassis is 44.2 cm wide and 19.1 cm high, and weighs 18 kg.
The Marantz porthole on the front panel houses a needle meter that tracks the output level; it is the unit's only display. The front panel is metal and the chassis is copper-plated. The amplifier switches itself off after a period of inactivity and then draws 0.2 W in standby.
For the AMP 20, Marantz developed custom Class D amplification paired with its HDAM-SA2 technology. The Marantz Sound Master selected every component during final tuning. The unit is built in Shirakawa, Japan, and draws 400 W in operation and 110 W at idle with no signal.
Each channel takes an RCA or a balanced XLR input, chosen with a selector. Bi-Amp mode powers the bass and treble sections of a speaker separately, while BTL mode bridges two channels into one 400 W channel into 8 ohms. Twelve pairs of SPKT-1+ terminals, an RS-232C port, an IR flasher input, the Marantz Remote Bus and a DC trigger input and output complete the rear panel.
