The TD 124 DD sets aside the idler wheel and belt of the 1957 model for a high-precision direct drive. Its high torque holds the speed in check and keeps motor vibration away from the record surface. The height-adjustable aluminium chassis rests on rubber elements that filter resonances. The 3.5 kg aluminium platter adds its inertia to the whole.
The TP 124 arm has an effective length of 232.8 mm, an overhang of 17.8 mm and an offset angle of 23.66 degrees. Its effective mass of 18 g suits a wide range of cartridges, which the removable SME-connector headshell lets you change without tools. Anti-skating works through a counterweight on a thread guided in a ruby. A patented electronic lift handles lowering and raising the stylus.
The electronic selector takes the platter from 33.3 to 45 revolutions per minute. Regulation limits speed variation to 0.035 % to DIN, that is 0.007 % W.R.M.S. weighted. A second, slightly heavier counterweight comes with the turntable to take the Thorens SPU TD 124 cartridge sold separately, developed with Ortofon.
The turntable puts out its signal single-ended on RCA and balanced on XLR. That second path preserves the link to the phono stage when it carries the matching inputs. The external TPN 124 power supply keeps the mains section away from the arm and the motor, on 115 or 230 volts for 5 watts of consumption. The turntable ships without a cartridge, with two counterweights, an arm alignment tool and its manual.
