The Simply Phono houses its power supply in a separate enclosure, linked to the preamp by a keyed plug that a rotating sleeve locks in place. The manual specifies how the two cases are arranged, so that the transformer's magnetic field does not induce hum in the phono stage. Inside, the amplification circuits sit on a floating mount. The set weighs 3 kg including the power supply and draws about 20 W.
Four ECC83 (12AX7) valves handle the amplification, in pure class A and without feedback. RIAA equalisation is passive and follows the standard curve within ±0.2 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. With 52 dB of gain and a line output of 800 Ω impedance, the preamp drives the line input of the amplifier directly. Signal-to-noise ratio is specified at -72 dB and harmonic distortion at 0.4 % for 1 V output.
The black cover sits on a wooden base and side cheek, finished in Cherry or Mahogany. Unison Research finishes these parts by hand in its own workshop, using an oleoresin lacquer close to those of 18th-century Italian instrument makers. When the wood looks dry, a thin coat of beeswax revives the finish. The case measures 140 mm wide, 290 mm deep and 105 mm high.
The input takes an MM cartridge or a high-output MC above 2 mV. A gold-contact switch on the back sets the input impedance to 47 kΩ, 100 Ω, 50 Ω or 22 Ω, with a capacitance of 100 pF. Designed first for Unison Research amplifiers, the Simply Phono also fits into any quality hi-fi system. 2-year warranty, valves guaranteed for 3 months.
