Metamaterial absorption

A tweeter radiates as much energy backwards as forwards. Behind the one in the LS50 Meta, KEF has placed a Metamaterial disc pierced with channels of differing lengths, each tuned to a frequency: the rear wave enters, falls out of phase and dissipates as heat. 99 % of that high-frequency energy never returns to the cone, where it would add itself to the signal as colouration. What is left is what the musician played.

Twelfth-generation Uni-Q

The 25 mm tweeter does not sit beside the bass-midrange driver, it occupies the acoustic centre of the 130 mm aluminium cone. Both sources therefore leave from the same point, and the stereo image holds when you move off axis: at a desk, on an off-centre sofa, in a room where nobody ever listens dead centre. The crossover hands over at 2.1 kHz.

Progressively flared port

A conventional port whistles as soon as the air flow rises. This one flares along its whole length and spreads the turbulence instead of concentrating it at the mouth. The measured curve goes down to 47 Hz at −6 dB, 26 Hz in typical in-room response, and harmonic distortion stays under 0.1 % between 300 Hz and 10 kHz — the midrange does not blur when the level climbs.

Load and installation

85 dB of sensitivity and an impedance falling to 3.5 Ω: this speaker calls for an amplifier that holds the load, between 40 and 100 W per channel. The cabinet weighs 7.8 kg for 302 × 200 × 280.5 mm, compact enough for a bookshelf, heavy enough to stay in place. Threaded inserts under the base take the S2 floor stand, sold separately, and two port bungs come with the pair to close the port when the rear wall is too close.
