EPOS ES14N on its dedicated stand in a classic interior

Return of a reference

The ES14N takes up the concept of the original ES-14, re-engineered by Karl-Heinz Fink in his measurement laboratories in Essen. This two-way stand-mount measures 491 x 250 x 385 mm and weighs 16 kg without its stand. The German-made 4 mm banana terminal deliberately uses very little metal, a choice inherited from the historic model.

Tuned bass-reflex loading

The cabinet is bass-reflex loaded with a 38 Hz tuning and a response from 40 Hz to 23 kHz at -6 dB. The port, placed at the rear, carries openings in its middle covered with a soft material that neutralise its own resonance without cutting the bass. The front baffle is tilted backwards to time-align the woofer and the tweeter, and its 45 degree chamfer limits diffraction between 2 and 3 kHz.

Tweeter without ferrofluid

The 28 mm dome is made of an aluminium alloy with a ceramic coating that increases its stiffness. No ferrofluid is used in the gap: temperature stays stable and dynamic compression drops. The dome resonance is pushed towards 30 kHz, outside the audible band, and a dedicated filter attenuates it without touching levels below 20 kHz. The tweeter plate touches the cabinet at four points only, around the screws.

Seven-inch injected bass

The 7-inch bass driver carries a 35 mm voice coil and a hybrid motor combining ferrite and neodymium. Its mica-filled polypropylene cone is injection moulded with a variable thickness, suspended by a low-hysteresis rubber surround. The result reads on the 87 dB sensitivity for 2.83 V at 1 m and on a distortion of 0.2 percent THD at 1 W. Average impedance is above 6 ohms and never drops below 4.3 ohms at 160 Hz.
