Moon 820S external power supply in a hi-fi rack

Two toroidal transformers

The 820S carries two custom-developed toroidal transformers, one for the analogue side, the other for the digital side. Their magnetic, electrical and thermal losses are reduced. Power transfer gains in speed and in stability.

Pi filtering

After rectification, each supply passes through two pi-type filters. They call on 40 000 microfarads of capacitance, spread over four capacitors, and two 20 millihenry chokes. Noise carried by the mains is strongly attenuated.

Discrete regulation circuit

Discrete M-R2S regulation

Four M-R2S regulation stages equip each supply. The circuit is entirely discrete, with a precision reference driving an amplifier made of several integrated circuits and transistors. Output voltage stays stable and practically free of measurable noise.

Supply outputs on the rear panel

Wiring and compatibility

The circuit boards are four-layer, in pure copper, with very low impedances. Signal paths are shortened accordingly. The unit powers the 810LP phono stage among others.
