USB transfers hi-res data bit for bit, but it was not designed for audio: it transports both power and data. It therefore picks up electrical noise, for example from the computer's power supply, which causes errors, data loss and poor signal integrity. You hear it as distortion, pops, clicks and delays.
The iSilencer+ removes electrical noise, including EMI and RFI, at source with iFi's Active Noise Cancellation II circuit. This circuit reduces noise in a similar way to noise-cancelling headphones, and measured noise drops by a factor of 100, or 40 dB, compared with a common filter. Music sounds clearer, warmer and more transparent, with improved bass.
REbalance technology rebalances the signal so that the data received by the DAC is identical to the source, whatever the format played. It removes the clicks and distortion caused by jitter. Low-ESR tantalum capacitors improve input and output filtering, and filtering capacitance has been increased tenfold.
The iSilencer+ goes between the computer and the DAC, but also into unused USB ports to further reduce radiated EMI: each time the number of units doubles, the noise reduction capability doubles too. It runs at SuperSpeed USB 3.0, USB 2.0 compatible, at 5 V and 1 A with 6.3 V maximum, and its connectors are gold-plated. The three versions, USB-A to USB-A, USB-C to USB-A and USB-C to USB-C, measure 50 x 20 x 9 mm and weigh 7 g.
