The C 389 is built on a customised version of NAD's HybridDigital UcD stage, with several UcD modules in a balanced bridged configuration. It delivers 130 W per channel continuous into 8 and 4 ohms, and its switch-mode power supply keeps current in reserve. At peak it provides 210 W into 8 ohms, 300 W into 4 ohms and up to 350 W per channel to follow musical transients.
The digital section uses the same 32-bit/384 kHz ESS Sabre 9028 DAC chip as the Masters M33 amplifier, with wide dynamic range and near-zero clock jitter. Two optical and two coaxial inputs take players and set-top boxes. The HDMI eARC input brings in the TV sound, and the TV remote then controls the volume.
Two MDC2 slots on the back let the unit evolve through modules, with two-way communication between module and amplifier. The optional MDC2 BluOS-D module adds high-resolution BluOS multi-room streaming over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, with AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect. It also brings Dirac Live room correction, applied to every connected source.
An MM turntable plugs into the phono stage, with accurate RIAA equalisation and a circuit that filters out infrasonic vinyl noise without touching the bass. Two line inputs, two subwoofer outputs for a 2.1 or 2.2 system and two pairs of speaker terminals complete the panel, along with aptX HD Bluetooth. The dedicated low output impedance headphone amplifier also suits demanding studio headphones.
