The RA180 replaces the silicon transistors of Class D with gallium nitride (GaN) transistors. HiFi ROSE quotes a switching dead time cut at least tenfold, giving an output very close to linear. Distortion stays at 0.006% at 50 W and the damping factor exceeds 150. The 800 W switch-mode power supply, with SiC transistors and power factor correction, absorbs sudden changes in load.
Four 200 W amplifier modules power the RA180. On a bi-wirable speaker, two modules drive the bass and treble separately, with the H/F output passing through an active high-pass filter adjustable from 600 Hz to 6 kHz. In BTL mode the modules pair up to deliver 400 W per channel into 8 ohms. The A/B selector takes two pairs of speakers, and a subwoofer output extends the bass.
The phono input accepts moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, chosen with a switch. Two selectors set the equalisation curve, turnover from 300 to 700 Hz and roll-off from 1.6 to 6.36 kHz, so records cut to curves other than RIAA also play correctly. Three RCA line inputs and a balanced XLR input complete the connections, with a motorised input selector controlled remotely.
The aluminium front panel brings together two VU meters, ±15 dB bass and treble controls, a balance control and a subsonic filter at 50 Hz. The Pure Direct button bypasses these controls when the source does not need them, and the lighting dims across three levels. The casing measures 43 cm wide, 39.1 cm deep and 12.4 cm high, and weighs 16.7 kg.
