S/PDIF is the main digital audio output of the Apple TV, PS5, Xbox and 4K or 8K TVs, but these mainstream devices often send a signal laden with jitter. The SPDIF iPurifier2 sits between the source and a DAC with an S/PDIF input to correct this flaw. The sound gains in dynamic contrast, warmth and detail.
The signal goes through four stages: galvanic isolation, regeneration by REgenerate, buffering, then reclocking by REclock. Galvanic isolation separates the electrical circuits to eliminate stray currents. A 10 MHz Global Master Timing femto clock handles the reclocking, and transmission stays bit-accurate, with no oversampling.
The input combines an optical mini-jack and a gold-plated 75 Ω coaxial socket. On the output side, a gold-plated 75 Ω coaxial socket and an optical mini-jack work at the same time, so two devices can be connected. The SPDIF iPurifier2 also works as a coaxial-to-optical converter, with Toslink or digital cables on almost any S/PDIF source.
It accepts 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz at 16 to 24 bits, as well as MQA, DSD over DoP, Dolby Digital and DTS. Power comes through a USB-C port at 5 V and 500 mA, with iFi's iPower 5 V adapter supplied, and an LED changes colour with the sample rate. Four 100 µF tantalum capacitors and gold-plated copper EMI/RFI shielding sit inside a 76 x 19 x 20 mm case weighing 56 g.
