Many large amplifiers give off a mechanical hum that you can hear with your ear close to the chassis. It comes from the toroidal transformer: a small DC voltage on the mains reaches it, saturates it and makes it vibrate. The more powerful the amplifier, the larger its toroidal transformer and the more sensitive it is to this residual DC voltage.
Fitted to the IEC mains inlet at the back of the amplifier, the DC Blocker stops the DC voltage before it gets in. Its ZERO DC Block technology blocks up to 1200 mV of incoming DC, with no DC passing through. The transformer then works in the intended conditions and the mechanical hum disappears.
The shielding against electromagnetic interference is retained and the safety of the component is unaffected. iFi uses a glass passivated semiconductor with a dielectric strength of 1500 VRMS, UL listed. The socket, connector and case are made of UL94-V0 flame-resistant polymers, and the IEC connectors are hospital grade.
The DC Blocker works from 90 to 240 V, with a maximum current rating above 7 A and a continuous current rating of 4 A. It suits amplifiers up to 880 W or VA at 220 V, and 440 W or VA at 110 V. At 68 x 37 x 32 mm and 63 g, it does not cover any neighbouring socket or cable, and it can be combined with the GND Defender when the hum comes from a ground loop between several components.
