An ideal system has a single earth. When several components are each earthed to the mains, a ground loop forms and the speakers let through a low, steady hum. Plugged into the IEC mains inlet of a component, the GND Defender detects that loop and cuts the ground of that component.
The GND Defender is not a simple ground lift: the protective earth of the component stays connected. If a fault occurs, the ground connection is reinstated automatically so the current can pass, and the shielding against electromagnetic interference stays in place. The usual fixes, such as the cheater plug that drops the earth pin, sacrifice either safety or shielding, and many work in one country only.
Inside, iFi pairs a high-performance glass passivated semiconductor with an X7R capacitor. The case offers a dielectric strength of 1500 VRMS and is UL listed. The IEC connectors are hospital grade, for a firm contact with the mains lead and the component.
The GND Defender accepts mains from 90 to 240 V and handles 10 A continuously, that is 1100 to 2400 W depending on the voltage, with a surge overload rating of 220 A. It measures 68 x 37 x 32 mm, weighs 61 g and does not block the neighbouring sockets. If several ground loops exist, one GND Defender per affected component may be needed, and it can be combined with the DC Blocker when the hum comes from the amplifier transformer.
