KEF Reference 3 Meta three-way floorstanding speaker, 12th-generation coaxial Uni-Q and two 165 mm bass drivers. It reaches 28 Hz in typical in-room response at a height of 1155 mm, for a living room of ordinary size.
The 25 mm aluminium dome occupies the acoustic centre of the 125 mm midrange cone. The sound leaves from a single point and spreads the same way through the whole room, so the stereo image still holds when you move off axis. The transitions fall at 450 Hz and 2.1 kHz.
The rear radiation of the tweeter comes back to colour the midrange if it is not treated. The Metamaterial housed behind the dome absorbs 99 % of it, against roughly 60 % for the classic approaches. Voices stand out that much better from the rest of the spectrum.
Two aluminium cones of 165 mm load the bass-reflex volume. Depending on the port fitted, extension reaches 38 or 35 Hz at -6 dB, and the typical in-room response goes down to 28 Hz. At 1,155 mm tall, the column fits a living room of ordinary size where the model above it asks for 1,350.
86 dB for 2.83 V at one metre, into 4 ohms with a minimum of 3.2: the speaker asks for an amplifier of 50 to 300 W and takes 113.5 dB of maximum pressure. Its 51.3 kg hold the cabinet still under peaks. Assembly remains manual, at Maidstone, as for the whole Reference range since 1973.
