KEF Reference 5 Meta three-way floorstanding speaker, 12th-generation coaxial Uni-Q driver and four 165 mm bass drivers. It covers 40 Hz to 35 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB and reaches 25 Hz in typical in-room response, with no added subwoofer.
The 25 mm aluminium dome tweeter sits at the acoustic centre of the 125 mm midrange cone. Both ways radiate from a single point and spread the sound evenly through the room, which erases the single listening spot: the central armchair loses its privilege. The crossover hands over at 450 Hz, then at 2.1 kHz.
A tweeter also radiates backwards, and that energy comes back to disturb the midrange. Behind the dome, a maze structure traps it: its tuned channels absorb 99 % of the unwanted sound, where the usual treatments top out around 60 %. The top of the spectrum gains in clarity.
Four aluminium cones of 165 mm load a bass-reflex volume. Depending on the port fitted, extension goes down to 35 or 32 Hz at -6 dB, and the typical in-room response reaches 25 Hz — low enough to do without a subwoofer on most material. Bandwidth covers 40 Hz to 35 kHz at plus or minus 3 dB.
The cabinet leaves the Maidstone factory, in Kent, where KEF has built its speakers since 1961 and assembles the Reference by hand. Each pair is matched to within 0.5 dB of the reference standard kept in the laboratory. The 60.2 kg per speaker and the 4 ohm load, minimum 3.2, call for an amplification of 50 to 400 W; maximum pressure then reaches 116 dB at one metre.
