KEF Reference 4 Meta three-way centre speaker, 12th-generation coaxial Uni-Q and four 165 mm bass drivers across 1090 mm of width. It holds 116 dB of maximum pressure, on a par with the Reference floorstanders that partner it.
Four 165 mm aluminium cones surround the Uni-Q across 1 090 mm of width. The centre channel therefore takes 116 dB of maximum pressure at one metre, the level of the Reference 5 floorstanding speakers alongside it. Typical in-room response reaches down to 33 Hz.
The 25 mm aluminium dome sits at the acoustic centre of the 125 mm midrange cone. Voices leave from a single point and stay with the image instead of drifting when you change seat. The crossover cuts at 450 Hz and 2.1 kHz.
Behind the dome, a labyrinth structure traps the sound sent backwards by the tweeter. Its tuned channels absorb 99% of it, where the usual treatments stop around 60%. On a dialogue channel, that clean-up is heard first on the consonants.
88 dB for 2.83 V at one metre, at 4 ohms with a 3.2 minimum: the centre channel takes 50 to 400 W. Its bandwidth covers 48 Hz to 35 kHz at plus or minus 3 dB. The 45.2 kg spread over 1 090 mm of width call for a support sized to match.
