The C 538 sits on a solid heavy-gauge steel mechanical base that reduces external vibration and keeps the CD mechanism precisely in place. The transport is mounted on reinforced steel rails, locked together by more than 30 fasteners. The disc spins smoothly, with a minimum of tracking errors.
Precise clocking feeds the digital data stream to the Wolfson 24-bit converter, which turns the PCM data into an analogue signal with accurate linearity. Multi-layer circuit boards with surface-mount components keep signal paths very short. A custom-designed active power supply delivers separate regulated voltages to the transport, the digital and analogue circuits and the display.
The C 538 plays commercial CDs as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs burned on a computer. In MP3 or WMA, a single disc holds up to 10 hours of music. The remote adds random, programme, repeat and A-B repeat play, and the dimmable display shows tracks and timings.
On the back, an analogue line output delivers 2.2 V to the amplifier. The coaxial and optical digital outputs let an external DAC or a home cinema receiver handle the conversion. It is 43.5 cm wide and 7 cm high, and draws less than 0.5 W in standby.
