Standard sheet metal is neither rigid nor accurate enough to hold a CD drive whose laser must stay precisely in place. The CD Box DS3 therefore sits on a massive, torsion-resistant aluminium chassis. It houses the Blue Tiger CD-80 servo developed by Stream Unlimited.
Three soft points isolate the drive from external vibration. One hard point channels the high-frequency vibration caused by the fast movement of the laser into the chassis. The drive is optimised for 1:1 playback of the Red Book CD-DA standard.
Conversion is based on the Texas Instruments PCM1796. The RCA line output delivers 2 Vrms, with a response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ± 0.15 dB and a noise floor better than 105 dBA. Two digital outputs, optical TOSlink and coaxial S/PDIF, can also feed an external DAC.
The CD Box DS3 opens the DS3 line and keeps the casework of the DS2 products, so the two combine easily. It measures 20.6 cm wide, 7.2 cm high and 19.4 cm deep, and weighs 1.66 kg. The high-contrast dot-matrix display, the front buttons and the supplied remote control handle operation. It comes in silver or black, and magnetic wooden side panels are available separately.
