The UHD8000 uses the standard 430 mm width of hi-fi components, with a brushed aluminium alloy front panel, a frosted top cover, a reinforced base and anti-vibration feet. Behind the large LED display, two hidden NSS bays each take a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive of up to 16 TB. The unit measures 43 x 31.2 x 8 cm and weighs 5.9 kg.
The Amlogic S928X-K processor with Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 cores works with 8 GB of DDR4 and 64 GB of eMMC storage running Android 11. The main HDMI 2.1a output sends pictures up to 8K at 60 Hz, in 12 bits with the BT.2020 colour space, in HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and decodes AV1, VP9, H.265, AVS3 and AVS2. The VS10 engine adjusts to each type of video content, and the frame rate switches automatically, 23.976 Hz included.
The audio section combines an XMOS interface, two crystal oscillators and an ESS9069Q DAC, which decode DSD512 and PCM up to 768 kHz in 32 bits. The signal leaves through balanced XLR and RCA, with a response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz at ±0.15 dB and a signal-to-noise ratio above 123 dBrA, and the power supply pairs a switching unit with a toroidal linear transformer on separate audio and video circuits. Connected to a computer running Windows 10 or 11, a Mac or an Android device, it also works as a USB DAC.
A second HDMI output is reserved for sound, Dolby Atmos, multichannel PCM and DSD, so an older AV receiver can stay in place while the screen gets 4K. Music arrives over DLNA, Squeezelite and TIDAL Connect, Dolby Atmos included, or from Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music, and an external drive plays unencrypted BD and DVD discs as well as CDs, with CD ripping. The rear panel adds a trigger output and an IR input on 3.5 mm jacks and an RS-232 port, and the player can also be controlled via HDMI CEC, Control4 or the Zidoo Controller app.
