Pressing the start button brings the arm to the lead-in groove; at the end of the record it returns, is gently lowered and the motor stops. The automatic mechanism works without any electronics and is completely taken out of the way during playback. It therefore does not degrade the sound.
At 45 rpm, the A2 lets you choose the arm set-down point for a 7-inch single or a 12-inch record. The 78 rpm speed has been added for old shellac records. All three speeds are controlled electronically by a regulated DC motor.
The 8.3-inch ultra-light-mass aluminium arm gets a larger-diameter tube and a four-point aluminium gimbal bearing with steel balls. Tracking force is set with a dial on the bearing, without moving the centre of gravity, and the counterweight is damped. The pre-adjusted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge adds body and warmth.
The arm, platter bearing and motor are mounted on a floating sub-chassis isolated from the main plinth. It protects the sensitive parts from outside resonances and vibrations, useful when speakers are close to the turntable. A die-cast aluminium cover tops this sub-chassis and the mechanism, inside an eight-layer hand-painted MDF plinth.
