The Defiance X15 is built around a 381 mm driver with a carbon-loaded polypropylene cone. Its ART surround, overmoulded directly onto the cone, allows a longer throw: Paradigm quotes 3 dB more output and 50% less distortion than with a standard surround. Bass extends to 14 Hz (DIN) and the response stays within ±3 dB from 18 Hz to 240 Hz.
A Class-D amplifier rated at 900 W RMS, 1800 W dynamic peak, drives the woofer. It switches itself on and to standby, and features improved soft-clipping circuitry. At the rear, a balanced XLR LFE input, three RCA inputs (left, right, LFE) and two speaker-level inputs serve an AV receiver as well as a stereo system.
Anthem Room Correction comes with a calibration microphone offering 3.5 mm and USB connections. ARC measures the room, compares the response with a lab standard and corrects bass anomalies. The measurement runs from a mobile device or with the supplied microphone.
The free Paradigm Subwoofer Control app for iOS and Android adjusts volume, the 30 Hz to 120 Hz low-pass filter, phase from 0° to 180° and deep bass, with three preset listening modes. The down-firing ports make use of the floor, and the Defiance WT kit, sold separately, adds a wireless link. The braced cabinet, made in Canada, measures 62.6 x 59 x 62.6 cm (h x w x d) with grille and weighs 41.7 kg.
