The Classic 98 revives the down-firing RELs of the 1990s in a compact cabinet veneered in walnut on every side. The almost matt lacquer keeps fingerprints off the veneer without adding shine. 15 mm MDF panels added to the side walls keep the cabinet quiet; it measures 35 cm wide, 47 cm high and 29.9 cm deep and weighs 18.1 kg.
The high-level input on a Neutrik Speakon socket connects to the amplifier's speaker terminals, the link REL favours for stereo. A .1/LFE RCA input with its own level control takes the bass channel from an AV receiver, and a low-level RCA input suits active speakers, for example. The crossover is adjustable from 30 to 120 Hz, the phase switches between 0 and 180°, and a toggle selects auto standby or always on.
The 25 cm driver uses a hot-pressed paper cone, chosen to recapture the gentle character of the original RELs. Facing the floor, it pushes air out between the base of the cabinet and the floor, spreading bass throughout the room. A 300 W Class D amplifier drives it, and REL quotes extension down to 27 Hz.
The Classic 98 is sold individually and works alone or as a stereo pair, with one subwoofer per channel. A wireless link is possible with a REL HT-Air MKII or AirShip II transmitter, sold separately. The rear panel also has a 110-120 V / 220-240 V voltage selector.
