The New Reference turns on a hydrodynamic disc bearing driven by a precision belt. A three-phase synchronous motor delivers consistently smooth rotation. This bearing-and-motor pairing forms the mechanical base of Thorens' reference deck.
Active vibration isolation, driven by piezoelectric sensors, corrects disturbances in real time. The sky-hook damping principle is added on top and proves up to a hundred times more effective than air suspension. The deck stays clear of the floor and the furniture.
An ultra-precise rotary encoder holds the platter at 33.3333 rpm. Quartz control with a double oscillator holds a stated stability of at most 3 ppm over twenty years. Pitch does not move.
The New Reference takes up to three tonearm bases and accepts 9, 10 and 12-inch lengths. Each configuration is built around the cartridges and the use. It comes in Gold, Silver and Copper finishes.
