The Pre Box RS2 Digital is the bigger sibling of the Pre Box S2 Digital and keeps its two ESS9038Q2M converters in dual mono, with separate paths for each channel. Over USB it accepts PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD up to DSD512. MQA is fully decoded in hardware.
The discrete, balanced output buffer switches between solid state and four 6922EH tubes. Eight digital filters, including the optimal transient filter designed with the creators of MQA, tailor the sound. A multi-core XMOS microcontroller and an Altera MAX II CPLD handle USB processing and re-clocking.
Digital connections include USB, two optical, one coaxial, a balanced AES/EBU, Bluetooth 4.0 and an I2S link. The latter connects the CD Box RS2 T transport, to which the preamp supplies the 16.9344 MHz master clock. An XLR and RCA analogue input adds to the XLR and RCA pre-outs.
The headphone amplifier is DC-coupled, with no coupling capacitors, and a fast DC servo keeps DC voltage off the output. It delivers 245 mW into 32 ohms and 90 mW into 300 ohms. A large display, an aluminium remote and a black or silver case weighing 1.71 kg complete the package.
