The Tube Box S2 hands its output stage to two ECC83 tubes, also known as 12AX7A. It delivers a full, relaxed sound with rich midrange. Its compact size lets it sit close to the turntable.
Both tubes can be replaced, so you can try other types and shape the sound signature. The circuit is fully discrete, with no operational amplifiers, and an ultra-low-noise FET input stage. RIAA equalisation is split into passive and active parts and is accurate within 0.4 dB.
Gain is selected directly on the front from 40, 43, 50, 60 and 63 dB, as is the 20 Hz subsonic filter. Five input impedances suit MM cartridges, while the fixed 47 kohm setting serves high-output MC models. Input capacitance ranges from 47 to 587 pF.
The aluminium and metal sandwich casing follows the look of the DS2 line and protects against vibration and electromagnetic interference. The dual-mono circuit looks after channel separation, and the high-voltage anode supply is well filtered. The unit is 10.3 cm wide and comes in black or silver.
