High-end MC cartridge with diamond cantilever and OKD generator, carbon permalloy armature, Urushi lacquer.

The Umami Black uses a diamond cantilever, the stiffest material available. Nothing flexes between the nude Microline stylus and the generator, which is exactly what a cantilever is for: passing the signal on without adding anything. It is a first in the Hana range.
The OKD generator combines an inverted U-shaped front yoke with a pole piece and rear yoke made as a single part. This geometry aligns the magnetic field and gives mechanical support to the diamond cantilever. The magnet is neodymium-iron-boron, and coil impedance drops to 5 ohms for an output of 0.3 mV, to be loaded from 50 ohms.
The armature is a 2 mm square plate of hybrid permalloy, an iron-nickel alloy loaded with 78 percent carbon. Excel Sound winds it by hand with 30 micrometre 4N copper wire on its own machines. Frequency response extends from 15 Hz to 50 kHz, with 30 dB of channel separation.
The Urushi lacquer is applied through a heat-curing process that bonds it to the duralumin body by vapour deposition. The cartridge weighs 11.3 grams, its dynamic compliance is 10 x 10-6 cm/dyne at 100 Hz and tracking force is set at 2 grams.
